Mwanawasa calls for effective AIDS drug

PRESIDENT Levy Mwanawasa has called on the Institute of Human Virology to come up with effective medicine that will assist prolong the lives of HIV/AIDS patients, or cure them.

Mr Mwanawasa said he was concerned and worried at the high infection rates in Zambia, adding that HIV/AIDS was not only adding to social problems but also affecting the development of the country economically.

The President said this in Maryland, Baltimore in America today when he inspected state-of-the-art laboratories and technological centres which are used for carrying out research into HIV/AIDS treatment and care.

Mr Mwanawasa, who commended the Institute of Human Virology for considering Zambia as one of the research centres in Africa, requested the institute to assist Government and transfer technological expertise to Zambia. He also encouraged the institute to consider herbal remedies as a cure for HIV/AIDS.

And Institute of Human Virology director general Dr Gallo said it was important to conduct research that was tailored to the needs of a particular country in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Zambia is the seventh of the eight countries in which the institute has set up laboratories in Africa. The other countries are South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Botswana and Kenya.
