SADC executive secretary, Prega Ramsamy has said that the dual catastrophe of poverty and HIV and AIDS continue to be a major regional development obstacle.
In his foreword in the SADC 2003-04 Annual Report, Ramsamy says SADC member states have however, continued to pursue and strengthen strategies to fight poverty and HIV and AIDS.
In the domain of poverty alleviation, member states deepened and consolidated their poverty reduction programmes both under the World Bank supported PRSP framework and under other nationally initiated poverty reduction programmes.
We have put in place an HIV and AIDS Business Plan as a follow up to the implementation of the SADC HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework and Programme of Action 2003-20007 and the Maseru Declaration on Combating HIV and AIDS.
