Tanzanian farmers advised to adopt GM crops

By ASNS

Farmers have been urged to apply organic agriculture since it is a holistic production system that promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health and is less expensive.

An agriculture marketing policy specialist from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ezamo Maponde made the clarion call when he was officiating the first national stakeholders’ workshop on promoting production and trading opportunities for organic agriculture in East Africa earlier in the week in Dar es Salaam.

Maponde said most of the soils are being degraded due to over exploitation, a situation that causes soil erosion and reduces fertility, which in turn leads to low productivity.

He said the use of organic farming could mitigate these problems as it provides a wide range of environmental friendly measures to restore soil fertility and hence soil recapitalisation.

’In organic farming there are no instances that could cause cancer, respiratory problems and any other major disorders because of the appropriate practices that based on the use of natural resources and understanding of the whole ecosystem,’he said.

He further said organic farming also supports and nurtured the beautiful and diverse wildlife, adding that fresh organic products contain up to an average of 50 per cent more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micronutrients than other intensively farmed products.

The specialist said in an economic perspective, convectional agricultural methods have brought a spectacular increase in production of more cereals per hectare, and more meat and milk per animal.
