Hyacinth may resurface, says scientist

By Fredrick Odiero

The dreaded Water Hyacinth weed may resurface over Lake Victoria again, a scientist has warned.

Dr J.B. Okeyo Owuor of Moi University told a conference in Kisumu the fight against the weed should be stepped up to include manual removal.

He was speaking at Tom Mboya Labour College at the start of the second scientific conference organised by the Lake Victoria Environment Mangement Programme (LVEMP).

Owuor said using weevils to destroy the weed had proved effective. Currently, an estimated 1,700 hectares of the weed covers the lake, as opposed to 1994, when it spread over some 4,000 hectares.
